There are different types of palatal expanders, and the best approach is the one that’s most suited to your child’s unique teeth and jaw development. Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE):
Used for mild to severe cases, the RPE has metal bands around the back teeth with a screw in the center. A special key activates gentle expansion, gradually widening the upper jaw.
Removable Palatal Expander:
Ideal for mild to moderate cases, this acrylic or metal device resembles a Hawley retainer. It works like an RPE but isn’t bonded to the teeth. Wear time varies for each patient, based on their individual needs.
