Get to Know the Types of Palatal Expanders

There are different types of palatal expanders, and the best approach is the one that’s most suited to your child’s unique teeth and jaw development. Whether they’re dealing with crowding, bite issues, or airway concerns, we’ll help determine which method is the right one to make room for their growing smile.

Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE):

Used for mild to severe cases, the RPE has metal bands around the back teeth with a screw in the center. A special key activates gentle expansion, gradually widening the upper jaw.

Removable Palatal Expander:

Ideal for mild to moderate cases, this acrylic or metal device resembles a Hawley retainer. It works like an RPE but isn’t bonded to the teeth. Wear time varies for each patient, based on their individual needs.

Invisalign® Palatal Expander (IPE):

Designed for kids 6-11, the IPE is a 3D-printed nylon device that gently expands the upper jaw without manual adjustments, improving bite alignment and creating space for adult teeth.

Surgically-Assisted Palatal Expander:

Used for moderate to severe cases in adults, this expander works with a surgical procedure that loosens bone around the palate, allowing controlled expansion.

Implant-Supported Palatal Expander:

For moderate to severe adult cases, this expander uses four small implants in the maxillary bone to effectively widen the palate.

Why Choose the Invisalign Palatal Expander?

The Invisalign Palatal Expander is a state-of-the-art device created by Align Technology, the innovators behind Invisalign clear aligners. This 3D-printed nylon expander gently and effectively widens the upper jaw in growing patients, helping to create a healthy, properly aligned smile.

With its innovative design, the IPE offers several advantages over other types of expanders:

  • Easy Oral Hygiene: The removable design makes it easy for kids to brush and floss effectively.
  • No Food Restrictions: Patients can enjoy their favorite foods without worry — just remember to rinse after meals.
  • Unmatched Comfort: Custom-made to fit the natural shape of the palate, the IPE is comfortable to wear.
  • Less Hassle: Adjustments are built into the system, so parents don’t need to turn a key.

The IPE may not be the best option for every smile, so trust Dr. Tongco and our care teams in Mesquite and Cedar Hill to help point you in the direction of the expansion method that’s right for you.
