What is Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery is a type of orthodontic treatment used to correct severe cases that include bad bites, jawbone abnormalities, and malocclusion. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of the nine recognized dental specialties, and it focuses on treating complex craniofacial cases that involve the mouth, jaw, face, and skull. If you need surgical orthodontics, Dr. Parekh will work with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to ensure that you receive the best care possible.

4 Signs You May Need Surgical Orthodontics

Not everyone needs orthognathic surgery, but here are some situations where it may be recommended:

  1. Severe Bite Misalignment – If your upper and lower jaws don’t align correctly, it can affect chewing, speaking, and even breathing.

  2. Jaw Growth Discrepancies – Jaw growth typically stops by age 16 in females and 18 in males. Surgery is considered when the jaw structure cannot be corrected with braces alone.
  3. Facial Aesthetic Concerns – Orthognathic surgery can improve the overall balance and symmetry of your face.
  4. Chronic Jaw Pain or Discomfort – Persistent discomfort caused by jaw misalignment may be alleviated with surgery.

How does orthognathic surgery work?

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon will perform your orthognathic surgery, and the surgery will take place in a hospital. Orthognathic surgery can take several hours depending on each individual case. Once the surgery is complete, you will have about a two-week rest period. Since orthognathic surgery is a major treatment, we recommend that you schedule some time away from work and school during the healing process. After your jaw has healed, Dr. Parekh will once again “fine-tune” your bite. After surgery, you will have to wear braces, and most braces are removed within six to 12 months following surgery. After your braces are removed, you will wear a retainer to help maintain your new smile.

Orthognathic Surgery FAQs

What conditions does orthognathic surgery treat?

This procedure addresses issues like severe underbites, overbites, open bites, asymmetrical jaw growth, and other skeletal abnormalities affecting oral health and appearance.

How will I know if I need surgery?

When you come in for your complimentary exam and consultation, Dr. Parekh will evaluate your bite, jaw alignment, and facial structure. If braces alone cannot achieve the desired results, we may recommend a consultation with a surgeon to explore options for perfecting your smile.

Is orthognathic surgery covered by insurance?

In most cases, yes! Ultimately, your coverage depends on your insurance policy and the medical necessity of the procedure. Our team can help you navigate your benefits and discuss financing options for your treatment.

How do I prepare for orthognathic surgery?

Preparation involves detailed planning between your orthodontist and surgeon. You may need pre-surgical imaging, consultations, and adjustments to your current orthodontic treatment to ensure the best outcome. Dr. Parekh and our team will make sure that you have all the information you need before the procedure.
